Licensing in Ontario

In Ontario, nurses are registered by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), which approves nursing education programs. According to the CNO, RN applicants write the NCLEX-RN, RPN applicants write the REx-PN, and both complete a jurisprudence exam. RN and RPN are different routes, so decide which you want before comparing programs, and confirm current steps with the CNO.

How to compare these programs

We do not rank schools, and we do not publish tuition, cut-offs, pass rates or seat counts, because they change and are easy to get wrong. Use the school pages for the facts above, then work through this list for each program you are considering:

  1. Regulator approval. Is the program on the regulator’s own list for the title you want (registered nurse or practical nurse)? Check the regulator’s list, not only the school’s wording.
  2. Credential and route. Degree, diploma or DEC; direct entry, after-degree, accelerated or bridging. Note the length the school page states.
  3. Where you study and train. Campus, in person or hybrid, and where placements usually take place.
  4. Application route and dates. Which application service applies, and the current deadline. They differ by program and change every cycle; some intakes close or pause.
  5. Language. Language of instruction and of placements, and the language of the licensing exam.
  6. Selection and prerequisites. Required courses, tests, interviews or lotteries listed on the program page.
  7. Costs and support. Ask the school for current tuition, fees and placement-related costs, and for what support it offers.

How Fiabita’s Study Lab can help

Study Lab lets you practise quiz questions and flashcards from your own notes and rehearse SBAR handoffs before placements. It is independent of the schools on this page, has none of their course material, and AI output can contain errors, so check it against your course content.
