Michener Institute at UHN in Toronto: what it offers nurses (and what it does not)

Canada · Toronto, Ontario · Last checked October 2026

The Michener Institute of Education at UHN is a Toronto institution focused on health professions education. It is not a school where you earn a first nursing degree or diploma, which is why this page is short and specific.

Fiabita is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by this institution. Current admissions, courses, placements and professional requirements must be verified with the official institution and applicable regulator.

What the school offers (nursing)

Michener's program directory lists full-time and part-time programs, graduate programs, micro-credentials, certificates, workshops, self-study courses and bridging programs for internationally educated professionals. Its nursing-related offering is post-graduate: the Acute Care Nursing Certificate Program, a Certificate of Achievement for registered nurses, delivered in a hybrid format (online learning, virtual classroom and a clinical placement) over eight weeks full-time.

That certificate is not open to individual registration. Michener says it is available by contract to hospitals sponsoring RNs who work in, or are newly hired to, acute care settings, with a valid Ontario nursing certificate required. Nurses who are interested are directed to contact Michener's continuing education office. Michener also lists a Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Technology program offered jointly with the University of Toronto, as an example of its non-nursing health programs.

Becoming licensed after graduating

Because Michener does not list an entry-level nursing program, there is no first-time licensing route to describe here. In Ontario, nurses register with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO); the CNO names the NCLEX-RN as the RN entry-to-practice exam and the REx-PN for RPNs. For entry-level nursing education, see programs approved by the CNO, such as the college and university programs on our Ontario guide.

How to apply

Michener directs applicants to the "How to Apply" section of its programs pages for full-time and part-time programs, and to a separate registration process for continuing education. Ontario colleges are listed on ontariocolleges.ca, which also lists Michener. Confirm which route applies to the specific program you are considering.

How Fiabita's Study Lab can help students here

Fiabita is an independent study tool and is not affiliated with the Michener Institute or UHN. If you are a registered nurse preparing for acute care or ICU work, Study Lab lets you upload your own notes and turn them into quizzes and flashcards for review. AI-generated content can contain errors, so check it against your course material and your employer's policies.
