Université Laval nursing: initial bachelor's, DEC-BAC and advanced pathways
Université Laval's Faculté des sciences infirmières, in Québec City, covers nursing from the first degree through graduate studies. All teaching described here is in French. Here is what the Faculty publishes, and what happens after graduation.
What the school offers (nursing)
The Faculty lists programs for entering the profession, for becoming a nurse practitioner (IPS) and at the master's and doctoral levels. The two entry routes are:
- Baccalauréat en sciences infirmières (formation initiale): a B.Sc. of 105 credits, taken over three or four years full-time, in French, on the Québec City campus. Clinical placements are spread across eight sessions, mainly in health facilities in regions 03 (Capitale-Nationale) and 12 (Chaudière-Appalaches), and optional 6-credit international or intercultural placements are offered. Laval states that the program has been accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing since 2003.
- Baccalauréat en sciences infirmières (formation DEC-BAC): for holders of a technical nursing DEC or an AEC in Intégration à la profession infirmière. Laval recognizes 36 credits from college training and requires 69 more university credits. It takes 2 to 2.5 years full-time (6 to 7 sessions) or 3 to 4 years part-time.
Distinctive points from Laval: the Apprentiss simulation centre and an anatomy laboratory in the Ferdinand-Vandry pavilion, and interprofessional collaboration courses with Medicine and Pharmacy students.
Becoming licensed after graduating
Laval states that graduates of the initial bachelor's gain access to the professional admission exam administered by the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ). Québec uses its own OIIQ route rather than the NCLEX-RN, and requirements can change, so confirm the current steps with the OIIQ. For the DEC-BAC, Laval notes that internationally educated applicants must already hold a right to practise in Québec and be registered with the OIIQ before applying.
How to apply
Laval describes the initial bachelor's as a limited-enrolment (contingent) program, with application dates that depend on the type of candidate. Check Laval's page on contingent programs for the deadlines and steps, and the program page for prerequisites. Laval's page states that regular contingent places are reserved for Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
How Fiabita's Study Lab can help students here
With a French-language curriculum and clinical placements across eight sessions, Study Lab can help you review from your own notes: pharmacology, assessment, and care planning in French or English. It can also help DEC-BAC students who are coming back to study after working as nurses. Study Lab is independent from Université Laval, and AI-generated content can contain errors, so validate it against your course material.
