University of Alberta nursing (BScN): four pathways explained for students
The University of Alberta's Faculty of Nursing in Edmonton offers more than one way into the BScN. This page sorts the pathways the Faculty publishes, so you can tell which one fits your situation.
What the school offers (nursing)
The Faculty of Nursing lists four undergraduate pathways:
- BScN Collaborative: four years; the Faculty describes it as its largest BScN program. You can complete the whole degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton or at partner institutions: Red Deer Polytechnic, Keyano College or Northwestern Polytechnic.
- BScN Bilingual: four years, delivered through Campus Saint-Jean with the Faculty of Nursing. Knowledge of both English and French is essential. The Faculty says French makes up 27 to 47 credits of nursing coursework, with the rest in English, and that the program is supported by Health Canada and the Province of Alberta.
- BScN After Degree: two years in Edmonton, for people who already hold a recognized university degree.
- BScN Honors: an add-on route with research mentorship, entered by transfer from the Collaborative or After Degree programs.
Becoming licensed after graduating
Registered nurses in Alberta are regulated by the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA), which has a page for university graduate applicants. Outside Québec, registered nurses generally take the NCLEX-RN, but the exact steps and requirements are set by the CRNA, so confirm them there. The University of Alberta's pages we reviewed did not spell out the exam, so we have not stated it as a program claim.
How to apply
For the Bilingual BScN, the Faculty states a single September intake and a March 1 application deadline, with applications handled through the University of Alberta's admission process. For the other pathways, follow the admission requirements on the Faculty's undergraduate programs page, and confirm the current dates.
How Fiabita's Study Lab can help students here
Study Lab fits the pace of an after-degree student who covers two years of content quickly, or a Collaborative student who studies at a partner site and needs a way to review independently. It can turn your own notes into quizzes and flashcards. If you are in the Bilingual program, you can practise clinical terms in both languages from your own material. Study Lab is independent from the University of Alberta, and AI-generated content can contain errors, so validate it against your course material.
