SAIT and nursing in Calgary: what the school offers and where nursing students go instead
Students searching for nursing in Calgary often land on SAIT. SAIT is a large polytechnic with a School of Health and Public Safety, but we could not verify an entry-to-practice nursing program there. This page explains what we found so you do not lose time.
What the school offers (nursing)
SAIT's School of Health and Public Safety groups its programs in categories that include dental, diagnostic imaging, emergency and respiratory care, medical laboratory science, professional health administration, vision care, and wellness and rehabilitation. The nearest to bedside care are in emergency and respiratory care:
- Advanced Care Paramedic: a two-year diploma.
- Primary Care Paramedic: a certificate of 40 weeks.
- Respiratory Therapy: a three-year diploma, preparing for work in emergency rooms and intensive care units.
On the Government of Alberta's Transfer Alberta nursing programs page (checked October 2026), SAIT does not appear among institutions offering RN, practical nurse or psychiatric nursing programs. That page lists, for example, Mount Royal University and the University of Alberta for RN/BScN, and several colleges for practical nurse programs.
Becoming licensed after graduating
These SAIT programs do not lead to nursing registration. In Alberta, registered nurses are regulated by the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA), licensed practical nurses by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) and registered psychiatric nurses by the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA), as Transfer Alberta's page names them. Paramedic and respiratory therapy registration involve other regulators; check each regulator's page.
How to apply
SAIT publishes application steps on its website for each program. If your goal is nursing, compare the Alberta programs on Transfer Alberta and apply to the institution that offers the credential you want. If SAIT adds a nursing program, check SAIT's page rather than relying on this one.
