Nova Scotia Community College practical nursing: guide for students
Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) is the province's community college system, with campuses across Nova Scotia. For nursing, its main entry is practical nursing, and a bridging route exists for continuing care assistants.
What the school offers (nursing)
NSCC's Practical Nursing diploma is listed by the Nova Scotia Nursing and Midwifery Regulator (NSNMR) among approved practical nursing education programs, delivered across 10 NSCC campuses: Annapolis Valley, Burridge, Cumberland, Ivany, Kingstec, Lunenburg, Marconi, Pictou, Strait and Truro. Not every campus necessarily admits every year, so check NSCC's program page for current openings.
- CCA to Practical Nursing bridging: the provincial government announced a pilot at the Truro campus in January 2024 and an expansion to Cumberland (Amherst Learning Centre) in January 2025. It takes about two and a half years, is mainly online with monthly in-person labs, and requires two years of prior continuing care assistant experience in provincially funded settings.
- Graduates of the bridging pilot sign a return-of-service agreement to work in continuing care in Nova Scotia for at least two years, according to the province's announcement.
Becoming licensed after graduating
The NSNMR regulates licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, nurse practitioners and midwives in Nova Scotia. Its website lists the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam among licensure requirements, and has a page for new graduates educated in Nova Scotia. Requirements change, so follow the NSNMR's current steps.
How to apply
NSCC handles applications for its programs. When we checked, its Practical Nursing program page said applications were “opening soon”, so rely on the NSCC page for the current status instead of older information.
How Fiabita's Study Lab can help students here
If you are a working continuing care assistant studying part-time and mostly online, short, flexible practice helps. Study Lab can turn your own notes into quizzes and flashcards on assessment, medications and care planning, and help you review before in-person labs. Study Lab is independent from NSCC, and AI-generated content can contain errors, so validate it against your course material.
