Nursing Programs in Prince Edward Island: A Student Guide
The short answer
Prince Edward Island nursing is regulated by the Prince Edward Island College of Nursing & Midwifery (PEICNM), operating under the Regulated Health Professions Act. Some older pages and the site footer still use the earlier name, the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of PEI, so you may see both. It registers registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse practitioners, registered psychiatric nurses and registered midwives.
The UPEI BScN
The University of Prince Edward Island offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing in two formats: a standard four-year degree and a two-year accelerated option for applicants who already hold a previous degree. UPEI states that graduates are eligible to write licensure examinations through the provincial college. Admission details are on UPEI's admission requirements pages, not on the faculty overview.
The RN exam
The regulator's examinations page says RN applicants complete the NCLEX-RN, a computer-adaptive test administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, with results usually returned within two business days and a minimum wait of 45 days before a retake. Practical-nurse exam details are on the same page; because exam names have changed in some provinces, read the current page instead of relying on an older source.
A fill-in comparison sheet
With a small number of programs, compare routes as well as schools. The cells are fictional examples.

Questions worth asking
- How many seats are there in each format, and how are applicants ranked?
- Which prior degrees qualify for the accelerated format, and which prerequisites must be completed first?
- Where are clinical placements held on the island and are any off-island?
- What does the regulator require on top of the degree?
Common mistakes
- Applying only to the standard format when you qualify for the accelerated one, or the reverse.
- Searching for a regulator under a single name and missing the other.
- Assuming practical nursing and RN follow the same exam.
FAQ
Q: Does a program listed by a school automatically qualify me to register?
No. Registration is decided by the regulator, not the school. Check that the program is on PEICNM's approved list and read the registration requirements that apply to graduates.
Q: Should I rely on this page for deadlines or tuition?
No. This page deliberately gives no deadlines, fees or admission averages because they change. Use the admissions page of each school and note the date you checked.
Q: Is this page legal or registration advice?
No. It is educational. Fiabita is a documentation and study tool, not a regulator or an admissions service.
